Where There’s Smoke

Written by: TROUBLMan

terror-smoke.jpgCheck out this new anti-smoking ad for ASH (Action on Smoking and Health), which substitutes the image of the Twin Towers with two towering cigarettes. The fine print reads: Terrorist related deaths since 2001: 11337. Tobacco-related death since 2001: 30,000,000. Around the Net, bloggers are condemning DDB, the ad agency responsible for the image. Copyranter asks, “Next time, why not add little floating pieces of ash to represent the WTC workers who jumped to their deaths?” My question: Does this cross the line or is it an effective way of communicating the dangers of smoking?

As a smoker it definitely has me thinking about my habit so I consider it an effective tool…and i dont think they meant any disrespect to those that died on Sept. 11th…i honestly feel that ppl are still very sensitive (as they are entitled to be) about sept. 11th but that doesnt mean there is no room for creativity around the subject…

  2. A lot of things cross the line. But getting the point out is real. More people are dying from tobacco each year. Those who smoke and those who get it from second hand smoke. Yes maybe they are crossing the line a bit. But sometime things have to be said in a way that maybe seems a little harsh. We need to stop tip toeing.

Possibly too soon but its a point well made. Let ‘em tell it without censorship. (Yes, I am a smoker)

People continue to be outraged by the spectacle of 9/11, but until it became chic to actually pay attention to what Bush is doing, they didn’t bat an eyelash at the 2 wars started directly because of it. The masses led by the spin doctors ushered in the fire and bloodshed with a round of applause. Meanwhile the rest of the world (and a considerable number of Americans) protested (we all know this story). But, Americans aren’t outraged at spending over $1.2 trillion or the US being responsible for costing the lives of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions of people from their homes. They don’t get this upset over tsunami’s, hurricanes, earthquakes, corporate scandels that effect thousands, international affairs, and all the other shit larger in scale in body count, total devastation and significance.

9/11 may be terrible, but its been used selfishly as a political tool since it happened. The mock outrage shown by the people no longer carries weight. But apparently, the image still makes a great marketing tool. This is far from the last time it will be invoked to get a response out of people.

  4. What gets me when people address 9/11 is that they only address part of the tragedy? Yes its tragic that people died. These were people with spouses, parents, and kids. But the tragedy people usually ignore is the fact that our government is not being upfront about its role in the incident. I’m one of those people who believe our governments connection to 9/11 has led to the death of way more than 3,000 people, but this story is rarely discussed.

So when it comes to advertising, I’d like to see the twin Towers represented more. But I’d like to see them presented in a way that makes us discuss the real story of what happened that day.

This does not; I repeat does not cross the line. This is what good ads are supposed to do. Get your attention. They’re just pointing out a hard truth. In a clear and precise manner it gives you perspective. When I first looked at it, right away I was like “Damn I get it” and I felt its power. It’s basically saying who needs terror, when we have BIG TOBACCO! I like this ad a lot. Fuck it; push the envelope it’s not like they are condoning terrorism. Great piece.

  6. When they were showing the body bags from this war coming home on the news. People where outraged. So they stopped it. You don’t here the media say as much about the war as it use to as to give the appearance that everything is falling in place. While everyday more of our men and women as well as innocent people there are being killed. Not only does tobacco kill pride kills. Tobacco is just another weapon of mass distruction. Remember that commercial where the women is smoking a cigarette from her neck. That was real. So to me the more shocking there is the better. We need to see the real thing. Death and blood shed for the fat cats to paid their pockets is real.

I think this ad is completely in bad taste smoking has NOTHING to do with sept. 11th. It disgusts me that this company would use this image for an anti smoking campaign when there is no relation. Now as a marketing person myself I can understand and even appreciate when compannies or organiztions go for the “shock factor” but that’s just out of pocket. They should be ashamed of themseleves or at least explain what point they’re trying to prove because i would definately love to know. Im a smoker I know it’s all bade and that I need to stop but this ad definately doesnt tell me that

  8. If you saw the lady in the commercial smoking out of her neck would that make you stop? If not your probably like my father who died asking for a cigarette. He laughed at the commercial. He was 57. RIP dad,

I believe this was a great Ad and if anyone finds this Ad to be offensive or tasteless is either sensistive or just down right negative. The Ad says so much without having to say a single word. 9/11 was and will forever be tragic but the truth of the matter is, you will have some people that are already over it, those that will get over it, and the few that will never get over it.

The Ad is very powerful. Makes you wonder why more people do not consider how many deaths occur each year from smoking related diseases. I can see how some people would take offense, due to personal reasons, but there are so many offensive things we see each day. I think all the harsh smoking ads are great for educating people and being real. (Like the ones of internal organs, or children who lost parents…etc.) All in all this ad is like a lot of other smoking ads, Real and trying to move people.

What about the one where the little baby is playing on the floor and from the heat vent smoke in coming thru from someone smoking in the building. It’s a reality smoking kills. Would you put your child in the middle of the streets while cars were coming. Smoking does the same thing.

There's a war going on outside no man is safe from. It's for our minds. The enemy--ignorance, apathy, and the people who profit from both. Strap yourself. Only the smart survive.
