Not Today
I’m not celebrating MLK today. His birthday was last week for y’all that don’t know. The Reverend doctor is one of, if not the most historic African American figures in the world. But now, many years after his death, he’s become a reason to stay out until the clubs close the night before his holiday?!?!? More than anything, he empowered us to dare to achieve; what we’ve been doing instead is on BET for the world to see.
As the duke, the epitome of bougie, thinking about Dr. king makes me angry. Why? How could I be angry with Dr. king? Well, because he was so damn good. Someone said last night as we discussed MLK, that we’ve always sold our problems to society to gain from them. Too bad today’s gains are economic and largely distributed to only a few of us. Don’t sell your culture to get out the hood if you’re not going to extend the hand back. And look at how cheaply we sell our culture man! Fucking ringtones?
Why are we waiting for another Dr. King? In remembering Dr. king, let’s remember the man, not the legend. People romanticize his movement, idolize him and forget that he had a dream… So like I said, I’m not celebrating MLK today. I’m going to celebrate everyday because most “niggas’ don’t, and I’m bougie like that. Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.

Q.
in the spirit of golf, i might get lynched for saying this, but personally i’m waiting for another X, before i wait for another King.. i respect and appreciate all mr. martin did for us, and i’m moved every time i see his speeches and see scenes from the past.. but with that said, i’d still be waiting on X before i would King..

I respect Malcolm and everything he did for America and for black people around the world. But I’m gone go with MLK before X. Although X did inspire us to to do for ourselves as a community, he was polarizing figure.
America wants our community to produce polarizing figures so that can frame their words in a black context. When this happens, everyone else tunes out, thinking he’s not talking to me. MLK spoke in terms of people in general.
Examine a current example. The reason why Barack has a chance of winning is because many blacks are unsure about him. If all balck people were like we’re voting for Barack he’d be the black candidate and whites would tune out.

I agree with you all in a sense. But the article touches on the fact that we celebrate the times. MLK was a man like anyone else. He had his bad and his good. But it took courage it to stand out at a time when it was not the thing to do, that’s what made him stand out. Thats what I remember. Personally I wan’t to remember him as well has others of his time who made a difference. I see that now with all the people I’ve been talking too on this site. We don’t have the big names nor the following yet, but we are already making a difference.
