Fear What

Written by: Alex Merricks

poltergeist2.jpgI am incredibly amazed at the things that occur when you decide to do something. It is probably fair to say that my amazement is more like an unfathomable look of distraught followed by a snicker directed at those who are “looking” for ways to stop someone from progressing forward. Why is it that people have a hard time telling the negative persons of society to “shut the hell up”! What is the exact product that these degraded types of individuals are bringing? Have they improved your relationships? Has their advice improved your income? Have you simply continued to spiral downward toward a dark void?

Probably most of you have had some sort of experience with that. As the saying goes, “our friends can victimize us more than our enemies.” However, what does that really mean? Well, if you ever watched the news, afterwards you probably felt disturbed for hours, maybe even days. That is why I gave up watching the news and media. I just would not confront the upsets and turmoil generated by peoples nationally, let alone, internationally. Therefore, if you ignore the news, chances are that your friends and associates are where you receive most of your information about current affairs and issues. If this is the case, please “BEWARE.” Where is it that you think your friends are finding their information? Possibly it is the same network you avoided on your television. Alternatively, maybe talk radio or some other venue.

Networks create an abundance of fear and propaganda in order to get legislation passed and to control and manipulate a population that is not taking advantage of its freedom. This is what is occurring in the United States. It is time the able citizens of this nation stop talking and start acting. We cannot be scared of government forces, or saying what we consider is true. Freedom of Speech is one of the greatest rights man has. Moreover, yes, the freedom to express oneself to others and convey his messages through words and other arts is a priceless commodity.

The trouble is, though we may be free to speak and express ourselves, what keeps us from doing so? We fear that what we say or communicate will be used against us. We fear that if our communication is too free and uninhibited, that we may acquire new enemies in the process. What kind of an existence is this where an individual cannot stand up for what he believes in? Living in a world where a man is discouraged from sharing his religious beliefs and background in politics, sports, and business is not the type of civilization I want to take part in. Is not human interaction exactly that? It is about humans interacting. How long can we suppress our natural urge to express our beingness to others and expect to sincerely be happy? Obviously not too long. Look at the depths and degrees in which humanity is declining. In order for humankind to catch up to the scientific breakthroughs he has made in the material universe, he must embrace the sciences, which have codified the humanities. Until then, man’s ignorance of himself and others, we breed fear and too many arbitraries will be left on the table to be confronted.

The truth is to look at existence for you. Although I am writing and expressing “my viewpoint” in this article does not mean that you have to believe what I am saying. It is a viewpoint based on my own observations. The data I communicate is empirical, not fiction. It is okay to take information from the outlets of media and to observe what is happening nationally and across the globe. Be sure, as an active citizen in the society, to put ethics in on the media groups. Do not buy the lies or support the untruths. Discern what you see, and use the ability to differentiate to see what is good and what is bad. Do not just listen to your friends and associates about issues, find out for yourself. Relay communications accurately and be specific in how you inform others about issues. These preventative steps will help us maintain a code of trust amongst each other. Rather than operate as a merchant of fear, we can bring uplifting messages as well.

You have nothing to fear people. If you are attempting to maintain safety and feel that by using honesty you will bring harm to yourself, please take a second look. You bring harm to yourself by omitting to do what needs to be done. You bring harm to yourself by withdrawing your allegiance to your brothers and sisters to the freedoms and rights. Lead a life of integrity, and you will have nothing to fear. If there is anything to fear, it is to fear that you will lead an incomplete existence if you do not start doing something about it.

one of the greatest gift we could ever receive is the ability to express ourselves freely. the problem is not that we are incapable, but that we are fearful of the struggle that will come with the fight. nothing in this world is easy. those who think they have it easy are people who are scared to face the realities of this world.

    go on, brotha…

    one love.

  2. For a young man who knows that, the media can be a force of ignorance in some of its messages, i am torn between the “idiot” box and the blogospehere.I love it,

One of my secret favorite shows “the hills” for example is a trivial show about girls for one of those big Teen magazines’..i think.

many might ask, what a young black male in america identifies with the hills.

well, i like lauren’s principles, and “the hills” reminds me of my burbs back in Nigeria

Although my post doesnt really make sense and it is me selfishly expressing how i feel. It’s my right and i’ll exercise it if you please.

But to end on a more intellectual note- Freedom of Speech and the right to exercise it, is a very important tool that will become increasingly powerful as the world has acess to the internet and increase communication with each other.

With great power comes great responsibility So as much as i can sit here and joke about shows i secretly like on the “idiot” box, know that if you have negativity around you, it is your job to SPEAK OUT and MAKE TROUBL.

It’s sunday the games are on and i’m loving the blogosphere. Go Giants!!

The last thing I want to see is some article exclaiming how bad off my culture is…I strongly believe in self-fulfilling prophecy, meaning, if someone tell you that you are something, eventually you will begin to believe it…I have chosen not to believe what someone puts in an article and beat my people across the head with it is the true…Do not take this as a personal attack or me accusing you of doing such a thing. I just want you to be aware of this…We live in a society that takes great relish in pointing at people of color saying “See? Look at what they’re doing now? See How they are?” Personally I want to get back to the day when we were pushing our excellence down their throat!!

I do believe in that self fullfilling prophecy you mentioned so the
time has come to turn that prophecy into the one we want it to be.
Not what society says it is. Some of our people are happy to live
up to others low expectations of us and it is those that people say
are representative of all of us as a culture. How is it that if one
black person does something stupid than we are all stupid as a
culture but Jeffrey Dahmer was going around eating people and the
decision was made that he as an individual was a nut and did not
reflect their culture as a whole.?!?

Ah…much better…This is what I prefer to hear, not just accept what is spoon-fed to us daily through the media…Remember this: The ‘powers-that- be’ will only allow what they see fit to enter the media unchallenged. ..We know better, don’t we?

    astromancer,

i understand your position on the matter of “self-fulfilling prophesy.” i think you are being wise by not believing other people’s ideas of truths. However, you state, “personally, i want to get back to the day when we were pushing our excellence down their throat.” by thinking like this, aren’t you being like those people who are claiming that they are better than other people?

the foundation and basis of the self-fulfilling prophesy comes from that very thought-people exclaiming they are better than others and therefore they have the right to judge those that aren’t doing as well. and this is not wise nor just. this issue will only spiral into a never-ending problem.

I think enough of us are going to get tired of the non-sense that
society is trying to force feed us and maybe it is with these types
of discussions we can call to action those who have been satisfied
with laying dormant. I am happy to participate in these types of
forums not necessarily of like minded individuals but more with a
    discussion of different ideas.

I would like to add a distinction to the discussions already taking place. A friend recently proposed the idea that there is confusion in our understanding of fear because one version is an natural emotional reaction while the other is learned through social institutions, like school, government or media.

The first type of fear is the one we usually associate with panic and terror. Try making a person who is genuinely afraid take an action against their own judgement and you will find it rather difficult, maybe impossible. This is where fight/flight reactions often occur. However, the spin we are constantly saturated in through media sources is a different animal entirely. Upon closer inspection, one can see the machine built to scare us into a particular mode of thinking. Through misdirection, half-truths and out-right lies we move towards taking action, whether that be following the ideals of a leader or taking no action at all (something all too common in our society). This type of fear tactic is subjective and thus dangerous because it can be applied and repeated towards almost any end. There are numerous examples we can point over the course of American history, and this propaganda continues to this day. The goal is not just economic and material consumption, it is also submission. If we recognize the difference between the two types of fear, the illusion created by the second type begins to fade and with it the frustration laced in the fear which tells us that nothing can be done.
