Racing Stripes

Written by: Lag

racins-stripes.jpgI spent much of my childhood admiring and riding horses. I loved everything about them and learned all I could - I read avidly, asked a lot of questions, and became a big fan of Thoroughbred racing. I have always watched the Triple Crown races (The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes - the three biggest races in the world) religiously and I spend the weeks leading up to the Derby in a state of high excitement. I’ve researched the industry, and spent a lot of time on horseback, so I’ve gotten to know a lot about horses and how they are raced. More »

AOG: From the Block to the Boardroom

Written by: Q

aog.jpgI love B.I.G., but we’re taking his rhymes a bit too seriously.. The man could definitely wax prophetic from line to line, verse to verse, song to song, but let’s move away from making his words the Ten Commandments of what we can become.. I know I have y’all wondering what I’m talking about, and I’ll get to it in a second..

I keep hearing the “voice” of our people (at least to mass media, which I disagree with) in magazines, interviews and every other outlet they can reach quoting BK’s finest..

“either you slang crack rock, or you gotta wicked jumpshot”.. More »

Kicks

1984.jpgThe 1984 Summer Olympics was the third Olympic games held in the United States and the second in Los Angeles. Amid Cold War tensions, the Soviet Union, East Germany, Cuba and 14 other countries boycotted the games. The games also marked the first time Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China appeared together in the Olympics as China. In preparation of this year’s Beijing Olympics, Nike is releasing its Olympics Pack. The release pays tribute to Chinese Olympic athletes from the past, specifically highlighting China’s victories in ’84.

To Home Plate

Written by: D.Yerevanian

field-of-life.jpgA Baseball Analogy…

• Some people are born on the Third Base and most of them are going to make it to Home Plate one way or another.

Second Basers… come to school prepared to learn and their parents are supportive of the schools. They will mature to be very capable players among the professional elite of our society.

First Basers will generally need help to make it to Home Plate. More »

Rocket’s Red Glare

Written by: Cypher

red-glare.jpgIf any of you caught a glimpse of the Roger Clemens press conference after his interview on 60 minutes, you would’ve seen a noticeably rattled Clemens facing the press. Everyone deserves the presumption of innocence before guilt, but as someone who has been around liars all his life, “we don’t believe you, you need more people.” More »

Bury Bonds Pt.2*

bury-bonds.jpgWhy should an asterisk be attached to Barry Bonds record when the pitchers throwing him the ball were juiced up also? Major league baseball needs an asterisk next to its logo. More »

25

Written by: TROUBLMan

25.jpgFor most young people in America, turning 18 and then 21 are times of celebration. The power that comes from being able to buy porn and cigarettes signifies their arrival at the gates of adulthood. When 21 rolls around, it’s assumed you’re grown and the ability to buy alcohol says so. (Yeah right!)

But for young black men in this country, the age we seek is past the days of purchasing cigarettes and booze. For us, the age is 25. Twenty five may seem an odd age for some, but for black men 25 is the age when statically we can let out a psychological sigh of relief, that says I survived, I made it, I’m in the clear. More »

Bury Bonds

Written by: Q

b-bonds.jpgthis has been messing with me for a day or so.. i can’t help it.. ever since last night, it’s been all over tv.. even President Bush took time to put out a statement about this.. all for a man, assumed to have cheated baseball by using performance enhancing drugs.. the gov’t felt the need to indict Barry Bonds on the grounds of him allegedly lying about taking said drugs while under oath.. it was a few more details, but that’s the gist of it. When We Were Kings

Written by: TROUBLMan

3d-kings.jpgWhat ever happened to the Jackie Robinson’s, Muhamed Ali’s, Tommie Smith and John Carlos’s of American sports. I’d even be happy with a few Dennis Rodman’s. I’m talking about sports stars who aren’t afraid to be bigger than stats and endorsements. Some people may not remember, but there was a time when athlete amounted to more than home runs, knockout and gold metals.

There’s a war going on. It’s for our minds. The enemy profits from our ignorance and apathy. We fight back. Our philosophy: question what we’ve been taught, examine society and create a community that teaches and inspires collective action.
