I know exactly how the therapy thing works. The psychologist scribbles a series of illegible notes onto a legal pad, intensely observing your every move. She asks questions about your deepest feelings. Of course, she questions about your father, while you sit there spinning around in a wheeled chair, wondering how the heck the good folks at Trident get their gum to taste like a real pina colada. Invariably, as we trek down the road to adulthood, we must bypass our inclination to pursue foolish puppy love, and reckless lust in favor of a more stable “adult relationship.” Gone are the days when we can merely “hookup” or “tap that,” as adults we become standard bearers to the ever important idealized American dream. After an exasperating run, I returned to my apartment to find an awkward black baby bird flailing at my entrance way. I live in a basement apartment and my doorway is below street level. This misplaced youngling endured a brutal fall and was yelping vigorously at my feet. I scrambled to recover this little bird and was reluctant to leave it alone in fear that it would be dinner for one of the feral cats in my neighborhood. More »

Yesterday, I learned that my son knows about race. “Mommy, I’m black,” he told my fiancé. When she brought it up, it surprised me because he’s only three and just recently learned his colors. “How did he learn this,” I asked myself. We have yet to teach him about race…or have we? In an ah-hah moment, I remembered something he has told me previously –“you the black Power Ranger,” he said. I realized it’s the toys. More »

Okay we made some mistakes! Okay we made a lot of mistakes.
There are no books on parenting. We lay down together with all of our emotions to make love or non-emotions and have sex. And here you are in all your glory unaware of what is in store for you. From that day on you belong to two people called a mother and father. While we become parents with little or no skills to prepare us for life on our own let alone a person with children. More »

As men, we sometimes take women for granted. So in celebration of Women’s History Month, I want to share my thoughts on a woman that I looked up to growing up; a who’s woman superceded every expectation that I had in the world; a women “Sweeter than cotton candy, stronger than grandpa’s brandy.” More »

I’m finding a large community of young ladies, college and beyond, who suffer from what I call “Daddy’s Little Girl Syndrome.” What I’m talking about is young girls/women raised without fathers. More »
