Dream Ticket

Written by: Rob Mania

team-up Dream TicketSeen it in countless comic books and movies: The Team-Up.

Magneto teamed up with Professor Xavier to fight off the evil government plot in X-Men Three. Hobgoblin teamed up with Spider Man to beat Venom and Sandman. Even Apollo Creed teamed up with Rocky to beat Clubber Lang.

The only way that Obama and Hillary are going to beat John McCain is to work together. The day of a “Dream Ticket” may be long gone, but they still have to put their differences aside and realize that they are, in the end, on the same team.

It’s tough to lose. It can only be frustrating for Hillary to come in second place, with some first place finishes in key states. But, Hillary needs to stop saying “I can beat McCain” and start saying “We can beat McCain.”

I always thought of the issue of “electability” as a big game of chicken between political opponents. No one knows who is electable until the votes have been cast. “Electability” breaks down to guessing whether other people, who don’t think like you, will vote for your candidate. This notion that Hillary can do something or say something that Obama can’t to beat McCain is a little silly.

Newly registered voters that joined in the throes of “Obama-mania” are not going to turn around and pick another Clinton. It may be unfair, but George W. Bush gave political dynasties a bad name. Hillary and Jeb Bush can go to a bar and down a few whiskeys together. While many folks fondly look back on the ‘90s, Bill Clinton was essentially a moderate Republican in his policies, and I don’t see large numbers of voters enthusiastically voting for a moderate 1960’s Republican over an insane, 2000’s Republican.

Obama has the youth vote in the bag. He has the support of many minorities, and his cool demeanor has won over a large number of women. But that support is being eaten away by a longer primary. The longer the primary goes, the more Obama looks like damaged goods. That sets the stage for a third party candidate, and if McCain can’t shore up his own base, we may see a Ron Paul, a Mike Gravel, even a Ralph Nader tip the election in unpredictable ways.

  1. I thought teaming up was a good idea a few months back, but now I’m like hell nah. First off, the answer of who would do better as the president still needs to be answered. If Obama wins and picks Hillary, he loses some integrity in my book. The people would understand that he’s just playing politics especially after all the slander and political tricks she’s used to shut him down. If Clinton wins and chooses Obama, her attacks become null and void and she become even more of a politicians in peoples’ minds. They need to figure out a way to support one another, but running together really makes them look desperate…

    TM-

I agree with you about Hilary looking more like a politician especially since she attacked Obama so heavily during this process but why would Obama loose integrity in your book if he picked Hilary? You dont see it as him being the higher person in the situation? Despite her tactics, he can still see her as an asset in his quest for presidency…

FYI- I love this reply feature!!!!

He has continuously pointed the figure at her for engaging in in the same ol’ politics, if he recruits her he becomes apart of that some ol’. I’d give him kudos for being the bigger person but to me, he’d be accepting all the grimy tactics that she has waged during this campaign.

    R Pepper-

LOL!!! I really like the comic book comparison…its cute and true to a certain extent too.

I think your correct; i think the bush family has given poltical dynasties a bad name. LOL @ Jeb Bush and Hilary comment! The people were in love with Bill Clinton, they didnt care about his wife…until the scandal occurred.

The only part of this article that Im struggling with is the part about Obama loosing momentum as the primary drags on…do you really think so? I think that if anything Hilary will continue to make a fool of herself struggling to stay in the race…I can anticipate more attacks on the Obama campaign but that can be expected even if the primary was over…why would he seem like damaged goods- if that was the case, I dont think he would be in the lead…

im interested…how do you see a third party tipping the election?

I thought that would be a good idea a few months back as well, but I think that if either won wins, and picks the other they lose some integrity. I wanted to see them roll together, but i see how nasty it has got over the last few months between them. But then again Jay Z and Nas went at each other hard, but like they say the best are suppose to clash at the top…

Yeah, they left the chance to roll together behind a long time ago. For Hillary, I really believe it is a matter of ego and not wanting to lose, whereas Obama’s whole platform has been Change, so he can’t really pick someone who represents the establishment (even if she is a woman, she is a Clinton, and R-Pep you hit that nail on the head that political dynasties have been devalued after Bush II). This is why if Obama wins the nomination, you’re going to see him pick a running mate like Jim Webb, a first term senator who actually recently switched his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat.

Instead of working together like the Republicans have done for the past 40 years, Clinton has made the classic Democrat mistake and attacked from within. Democrats need to realize that the party is bigger than any one individual, and work to defeating the Republican candidate, not each other. Wake the deuce up, Dems!!

This is sad put true. Hillary has really turned me off. I don’t think she should be vice president when Obama wins. In my eyes she wouldn’t want to be because of her ego. Because of that ego she has made this race so personal and mending would be very hard.
Obama is fresh and offers new beginnings for our country. Hillary to me will keep things the same and just talk. To me she is far from liberal.

What worries me about this race right now is the youth vote that you say Obama has “in the bag.” I think he does have the support of young voters, who are ready to see the partisan bullsh*t (pardon my language) end and a UNITED State to emerge again. But I remember that last time we voted, Kerry had most of the youth vote, and the time before that, Gore had most of the youth vote, and both times the GOP won because the youth DIDN’T VOTE. I remember hearing something like an 11% youth voter turnout. 11%??? Come on, young people, get in the game! We can’t expect to change anything if we don’t voice our opinions! I’m terrified that Obama won’t get the presidency just because we are too lazy!! Anybody else feel this way?
