Guilt By Association

Written by: Cypher

guiltby-associaton.jpgAs a teenager I was told to be aware of the people around me. It was sound advice, especially under the circumstances that I lived in at the time. I didn’t always listen to it, but it’s still sound advice. For a long time, minorities have felt the effects of mistaken identity; in some cases, we fall victim simply because what we’re wearing. That exact same thing has happened to Obama with the images being leaked by the Clinton campaign of him wearing native clothing. Is it possible that they intended for him to be mistaken for something he is not? The answer is yes.

There is also something else that plagues these young people, the effects of being guilty by association. This too, has been linked to Obama in the recent week with the statements made by his pastor. As a result Senator Obama will gave what might be the most important speech of his campaign. Some are saying this speech was even more important than the speech he gave at the convention that made him the people’s star. With the stakes so high, it vital that he put the people who are easily scared and manipulated by fear minds at ease.. For me, the speech was not just about Barack Obama. It’s about the many Obamas who fail as a result of mistaken identity or fail as a result of being found guilty by association.

I think in the case of Obamas campaign it’s so unfortunate that people are using whatever mechanism they can to get others against him. The pictures of him wearing native clothes when visiting his family in Kenya was simply a sign of him showing respect to his roots. But instead of pointing out his high level of respect people ar quick to judge and make assumptions because of the clothes he is wearing. The comments made by the pastor again are no reflection of who or what Obama is about. Personally, I would be so angry if the words that I spoke in my congregation leaked out. The words that the pastor spoke was what he felt in his heart and not only is it wrong to judge him but it makes no sense to judge Obama simply because he belongs to that church. It’s definitely getting gruelsome as the days go by but somehow I have faith that America will end up picking the right candidiate!

P.S. There are a lot of volunteer opportunities on his website so if anybody has time to go put in some hours it will really help. I kow they epecially want volunteers now to phone bank to penn. for the april 22 election

  2. Like I said before. Obama has class. although I didn’t agree with some of what his pastor said. I do think that in reality some things need to be said. We are walking around on eggshells because we have a president that has made us so afraid to speak out about this country and all the things that are wrong with it. There are some good things about us but, racism is a part of our country and has been a part for a long time. Not just for one group of people, but for all people and I think that he brought that out in his speech. And what he said about friendships he was right. We all have good friends that we don’t like the way they think, talk or act sometimes but we don’t walk away from those friendships. Our job on this earth is to reach out not push away.

There's a war going on outside no man is safe from. It's for our minds. The enemy--ignorance, apathy, and the people who profit from both. Strap yourself. Only the smart survive.
