Around the World

around-the-world-eats.jpgAround the world, everyone eats. What sets us apart is not only what we eat, but how much. Click here to see a cool photo essay that illustrates the average weekly food consumption of families across the globe. Interesting

When I first openned this, I knew what to expect. AND I STILL WASN’T READY FOR IT. To see the food laid out in front of families throughout the world sends interesting messages about how we all relate to one another as well as subtle differences in cuisine. But when it came down to the third world, my jaw dropped instantly. Speaking of quality of diets in communities…

You cannot quantify poverty. In other words, you cannot directly relate the sufferings of an impoverished family in the US to those in the third world. The problems are VERY different as are possible solutions. One does not deserve your charity anymore than the other when both are dying of starvation for example. Still, these photos are moving. I have a new appreciation for the wealth that I have taken for granted and also would love to see more on possible solutions to world poverty.

  2. It’s hard to get my daughter to understand why when I cook dinner and warm it up the next day. She doesn’t want to eat leftover. There we times when we didn’t have much to eat so we learned to make a little go a long way. My daughter was so young then and now she takes things for granted. She needs to see this and more.

  3. The most startling aspect of the essay is the fact that some people can get bye with so little. While others only know massive consumption. Its crazy that we Americans think how we eat is normal. The body wants less not more. It takes work to process food into energy. The body wants its fuel to be light but consistent. This essay needs to be art exhibit for young kids to see!

  4. This idea of quantity is taking over our country. Everything is extarvagant. It’s not only what we eat, but what we wear, what we drive, what we buy. Our economy is suffering and our country is in so much debt but still we insist on spending what we don’t have. It’s unfortunate that we stress the materialisitc so much these days, taking away the quallity of things. Yes, I will admit I like to splurge every once in a while but more and more I realize that this idea of over consumption is not necessary to have a happy life. In all actuality, it takes away from us living a happy and care free life. Have you ever thought about how much food gets wasted at the Vegas buffets every day? It’s crazy and should not be allowed. Seeing those pictures was really a reality check and it’s not so much that I feel bad for those who spend so little but rather I feel bad for us. Like anything else it should be quality over quantity..

In this lifetime, you are what you eat and unfortunately, you eat what you can! Its misfortunate the circumstances that people are born into and the people who take for granted the blessings that have been bestowed to them… Another thing that I have a big problem with is gluttony. Sometimes I see people stuffing all kinds of shit in they mouth, just because it is there. They say that no sin is greater than the next, but gluttony would be one at the top of my list.

  6. I’ve been in both places. When my kids and I didn’t have much at all. But I learned something very important. Sharing. I remember taking my kids to Mc Donalds for a rare treat oneday for some Happy Meals. One of my sons asked me why I never got anything for myself. I explained to him how we didn’t have enough money, but that was alright I just wanted to make sure they had theirs. So he took out his 4 piece nugget meal and everytime he took a piece he broke it in half and gave me the other piece. I will never forget the love we shared over some nuggets or some microwave popcorn etc. Having a little can mean an awful lot when you “Share.” We have a lot in this country, but we really have so little.

There's a war going on. It's for our minds. The enemy-- ignorance and apathy. Strap yourself. Only the smart survive.
