The 1984 Summer Olympics was the third Olympic games held in the United States and the second in Los Angeles. Amid Cold War tensions, the Soviet Union, East Germany, Cuba and 14 other countries boycotted the games. The games also marked the first time Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China appeared together in the Olympics as China. In preparation of this year’s Beijing Olympics, Nike is releasing its Olympics Pack. The release pays tribute to Chinese Olympic athletes from the past, specifically highlighting China’s victories in ’84.

It’s amazing when you think about how historically, politically, and socially influential a sporting event can be. Truly monumental events have taken place during these games…
I didn’t even know 1984 was the first year Taiwan (the Republic of China) and the People’s Republic of China fielded a unified team, so thank you Troubl for dropping that knowledge on me. For those who don’t know, it is truly significant considering the 2 countries (which are only 2 countries because of a civil war that took place over 50 years ago) are still officially at war.
I’m trying hard to build enough funds to make it back to the Beijing games this summer. It will give me an opportunity to visit my motherland and to see how far the country has come. It was only a short 15-20 years ago when China was still a closed nation…no one allowed in, no one allowed out. It was seen as nothing more than a third world country run by a bunch of Communists.
Well, I’m hoping to get that opportunity not only to see a nation that has developed by leaps in bounds in the past decade, but I also now have a chance to visit relatives I have never met before…perhaps even a chance to visit what is supposedly my ancestral village which has been in existence for over one thousand years–according to oral family records at least (hopefully there’s running water and electricity…I hear it’s in the backwoods).
But I digress…Trouble, holla at me when you back in the hometown homie. Glad to see you’re doing it big, knew you would. I be making sure I read your blog every week!
