Spaced Out: A New Beginning

Written by: SB

spaced-out.jpgSpaced Out is a exploration into space for people who don’t follow science. The goal is to ask questions, speculate and learn as we go.

Was last night random in any way? Did you feel anything different stirring in the air? I didn’t. It was a regular night for myself…well, until I heard some drunk guy four stools down from me at the bar, yelling about there being an eclipse. I thought he was just smashed but when I glanced up a few minutes later, I noticed that the moon was slowly being covered.

It looked like something out of a movie or should I say Hollywood’s depiction is somewhat accurate, minus their speed of an eclipse and there were no monsters or werewolves popping up to inflict havoc…well as far as I know.

A quick scientific explanation of a lunar eclipse is “the earth blocks out the rays of the sun which normally makes the moon look like it’s shining. The darkening of the usually bright moon is due to Earth’s shadow covering it.”

Before there were scientists offering empirical-based explanations, cultures all over the world proposed theories on the astrological occurrence. The Chinese believed that a dragon swallowed the Moon during an eclipse and beating mirrors would cause the dragon to cough it up; The Ge’ (Amazon tribes of Brazil) believed that eclipses were a fight between the sun and moon.

Regardless of reason, man has long interpreted the event as an omen or portent: a sign or event considered to indicate that a momentous happening will occur on the earth…somewhat like a new beginning.

Thinking outside the box, past our evidence based thoughts… what if last night did mark a new beginning for all of us? Is this new beginning for the best? Or for the worst? What does this inauguration have in store for us?

  1. Great post! Something different to think about besides ourselves. I can imagine all kinds of things that could be happening on earth, and I truly believe that each day something new is happening without us knowing as we go on with our busy lives. I heard about this on the new last night. Nature seems to be giving us hints something is happening. Maybe this inauguration will be change and people are feeling it in their hearts. Could it be the earth shadow over the moon is changing us. I think it already has.

It would be wonderful to believe change began with eclipses and other portents in nature but all change begins from within each of us. Its very curious that such a rare event was not “hyped”. I know I stopped and observed the activity with a sense of wonderment. But i’m curious to know, how many others did as well? are our daily lives so filled with the minutiae of day-to-day survival living in this world that stopping, smelling, and appreciating the flowers or an eclipse is a nuisance? God, I hope not…

  4. I heard about but unfortunately I missed it. I love space but I’ve never really explored the many astrological theories out there. The fortune cookie-style horoscope culture has put a bad taste in my mouth. I wanna explore but I don’t know what credible. The thing that I love most about space is that even the “smartest people” have barely scratched the surface on the knowledge that it holds. Thats why I’m so wide open to what ever info people can bring on space.

  5. I believe their is life on other planets. We can’t be the only ones in the universe. I refuse to believe that their are not people walking around on earth that are from other galaxies. I’m not on any meds either. And I do think we may be communicating without even knowing.

There's a war going on. It's for our minds. The enemy-- ignorance and apathy. Strap yourself. Only the smart survive.
