“The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied…but written off as trash. The twentieth-century consumer economy has produced the first culture for which a beggar is a reminder of nothing.”

It’s an interesting article but seems too pre destined. Yes, being rasied in poverty does put one at a slight disadvantge but to go as far as saying that it poisons the brain I don’t know if I completely agree. In my opinion, the family and society have a lot to do with the childs development and by provding things like love, nurture, respect, and emotional support these kids can grow up to be as successful and healthy than a kid who was raised in a upper class home. I think this is an excuse to cover up our countrys carelessness and “I don’t care about the poor” attitude. Like the country said the poverty rate in European countries is a lot lower. Not becuase all Europeans are hard-working and never fail but because their government actually cares about the well being of the people..

What about nutrition? Poor kids eat poor people food. This alone makes poverty poison. When you eat shit before school, how can you learn? When your schools are crowded how can you learn. THE CIRICULUM IS POISON.

Your completely right. A child who comes to school hungry is not going to concentrate and learn like the child who had a full breakfast. However, I just can’t allow myslef to think that that alone will ruin or poison that childs life forever. Some may find my way of thought as being naive, but when talking about children I can’t rule them out in any one way. Instead of worrying about the statistics and determining how ones life will end up, we should be figuring out ways to provide proper nutrition to these children. Like I mentioned before our government is not interested in aiding the poor and more over our education system is too busy barcoding its students and just waiting for them to get out..

This is true. And that is what I think the article I think is talking about. Our government and how we should be ashamed of the way we treat our people. The governer in california as we speak is signing off on bills to take from medicare and from the schools million and millions of dollars. While Bush is trying to look good over in Africa donating monies to the pure so we can say what a wonderful president he is. Yet he is the biggest hypocrite walking This is what affect our young and edlerly. And yes I agree that we just can’t pen it all on the government. Stronge family is very important. But when you have a society that doesn’t care about the people who came before you (The elderly) or the hands that will feed you in the future(The children) then families can’t make the difference it takes. Not alone and yes there a exceptions to the rule. Check out other countries Sweden for one. They take are of their’s. Our country is so busy padding the big shots pockets. Who cares about anything else. They just want to have theirs when we fall on our face.
