Ya Dig

Written by: TROUBLMan

Jones Ya DigDweeb: A synonym for geek or nerd, first used in the 1960s, recently became a part of the hip-hop lexicon when Jim Jones lambasted Nas for his protest of Fox news’ racist reporting outside of the network’s Manhattan offices. (Watch Nas here)

According to Jones:
“…We don’t wanna hear that bullshit you tryna kick, man. That propaganda shit. Fuck outta here. It’s 2008 and it’s a recession. Let’s talk about that. Let’s talk about getting back, finding out how we make some fuckin’ money in these fucked up times. (Watch Jim Jones here) It’s dry out there, ya dig? It ain’t no money out there. It’s a drought out there. It’s bad for both sides of the fence, whether you pay taxes or you don’t.”

More than rap beef, this incident poses a larger question. Are Jones’ statements on point with the sentiment of the hip-hop community? Are the tactics once used by blacks and other marginal people irrelevant. Should we simply strive for economic equality? If so, what’s the plan to survive the drought?

  1. The dorught is definitely kickin people in their asses! Including myself, It’s a bad feeling to look around and see more than just a few of the people close to you in bad economic hardships. I think its is dope and real that Mr. Jim Jones is talking and putting emphasis on the recession even with his problems being minute to others. I think it’s such a global issue that can’t be ignored. Even though some pretend to, because it’s not directly affecting them…

  2. Q.

Jim ain’t lying, but i’m not sure what it has to do with coming at Nas.. I think he just used the opportunity to go at Nas yet again, since Nas murdered him on one of those mixtape DVDs..

but Jimmy is right.. i’ve seen these rappers convert to drinking water instead of Ciroc.. Jeezy said it in that Vibe interview.. times changed.. cats ain’t getting money like they used to..

  3. I think if you look even deper into it, It’s even more messed up for pioneers in the rap game who haven’t per say eaten like the last error of rappers who were makin that guap. Not only do they have to live with the fact that they pioneered this shit, didn’t eat like they should have, and now realizing this life recession. It’s messed up, No one deserves to feel that way…

  4. According to economist we’re technically not in a recession, but you can’t tell the average American that. It’s one thing to be in a recession, but how it looks now the situation is much worse than a recession. What we’re experiencing is the collapse of our financial system. Everybody thinking bout how they one eat. When you trying to figure out how you gone eat you don’t have time to dream. I don’t want to get stuck in that mode. That’s the challenge of this whole shit. It’s in us to grind and find a way to eat, but we got to make sure we continue to dream. Eatin’ it about today, but dreaming is about eatin’ next week, next month, next year. Remember to keep that in mind.

wow. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
not being able to dream would destroy me.
Realizing that being just a writer wasnt going to “bring home the bacon”, at least, not enough bacon to feed anyone but the occassional house mouse was an eye opening experience.

  5. Jones is ignorant, Q’s right he’s just mad Nas shit on him on that mixtape, a major news network putting out racist propaganda IS definitely a problem that should be addressed and if it help somebody sell some albums and get some money in this fucked up economy than so be. Jim really only has had one hit so really in the long run is that relevant?? Maybe Im just hating, but I’ll own that.

  6. Excuse me, but what happened to brotha’s sticking together and supporting each other. Jim makes vaild points about our economy and Nas has vaild reasons for standing up against Faux News. The difference between the 2 brothas is that Nas actually took a stand. He noticed the problem and did something about it. Jim on the other hand did what??? Not a d**mn thing.

You’re right Nas did stand up. I just hope he continues and shows that his actions are more than a publicity stunt. It is rather convenient that Nas protest FOX when his album drops. And despite what Jones thinks, Nas actions are relevant because they inspire others to stand up. A lot of people follow Nas so it’s important that he do things like this. Only time will tell.
